Welcome to my first review of my Bleed Red Go Green project. My goal for this project is to review as many sustainable and toxin free period products as I can, in efforts to promote menstrual products that are safe for you and the environment. While I plan to partner with several brands in this project, I can promise that these will be honest reviews based on my experience. I want to clarify that my experience with these products are specific to my body and menstrual routine, and I encourage menstruators to do their own research and experimentation.
That being said, my first review is of the Thinx period underwear that was gifted to me by Thinx. Specifically, I will be reviewing the Love Your Period Set ($89) and the Super Hiphugger ($39).
In short, I’m a big fan. I found that these underwear were incredibly absorbent on their own. I had an abnormally heavy period this month and rarely leaked when solely relying on these period products. I will say that the Super Hiphugger is incredibly more absorbent than those in the Love Your Period Set, but still way more absorbent than your average tampon.
I also found them to be a great backup to wear alongside my menstrual cup. I wore each for about 5 hours at a time when relying on them solely, and probably would not recommend using them for more than that on their own. When I used them as a backup with another period product, I could wear them for as long as 12 hours.
For those that are uncomfortable with pads and sitting in their blood, this may not be the period product for you. I did not find it overwhelmingly uncomfortable, but sometimes I was very aware of the fact that I was sitting in my own blood. I will probably continue to use these underwear as a backup method rather than my primary period management product.
As for cleaning, I hand washed each underwear with warm water and allowed them to air dry. The blood came out easily and it was a quick wash. After my period ended and I had hand washed all of my underwear, I washed them in cold water without fabric softener in my machine and allowed them to air dry.
All in all, Thinx has my stamp of approval.
